do the sturgis tango.
so trying to think of how to explain to people what it is about a holiday like that thats appealing, and its harder than youd think.
especially to someone who hasnt been there,
or at least seen the black hills.
so once you get there its obvious why the bike rally gets held there,
the riding is unmatched, in my opinion.
you can ride through the badlands in the desert,
back and forth through those hills,
herds of buffalo filling the prairies on either side.
ride 60 miles and do the canyon run and walk up to the bottom of a few different waterfalls, the canyon walls framing the road the whole way down.
then go south 40 miles to keystone and do the needles and iron mountain road.
which consists of 15 mph switchbacks, the pigtail bridges, tunnels carved through the side of the mountain, views of rushmore, and it goes on.
all that in one day if youre energetic.
and thats just the riding.
theres piles more to see and do the keep you busy. and i wont get into that stuff now.
but thats the best part about the trip.
being busy always happens,
but making plans never does.
the morning goes something like this......
wake up to the sound of thousands of bikes ripping past the tent around 7 usually.
stumble out of the tent and into the cabin for a coffee.
sit in the lawn chairs drinking coffee and smoking, listening to the bikes, and watching the sun start to come over the canyon walls for a couple hours at least.
"whats your plan today?"
"i dont know, where you going?"
-shrugs-
"whatever i guess"
"yep, same here"
"ill wait and see if any of the boys got anything going."
"maybe ill do that too"
"im good for anything"
"you got it. best way to be."
up for anything, not planning any of it.
everything is one day at a time.
all the problems, my half finished house, the bills, the days and days worth of yard work and house work, everything.
its all left behind and none of it matters while youre there.
everyones there for the same reason.
not so much where youre going, but how youre getting there.
its not the destination its the journey,
and its a completely different way to travel.
not how long will it take to drive it,
but which way is the most exciting way to go.
which route affords you the most time on the bike, and the best riding.
its the most relaxing break from life and one of the most tiring weeks possible all at the same time.
